Procedure Descriptions:

ECHOCARDIOGRAM

What is an Echocardiogram?
An echocardiogram is a noninvasive test using ultrasound or sound waves to produce an image of the structures of the heart. To produce this image , a technician applies gel to the chest wall. A wand like transducer is then moved across the chest wall creating two dimensional images of the heart muscle and valves. This test evaluates the size, pumping power and function of the heart muscle and valves.

How do I prepare for an Echocardiogram?
  • You may shower and bathe the morning of your test. Please do not use lotion or powder on your chest. You may use a deodorant if you desire.
  • Wear comfortable loose fitting clothing
  • Take your medications as instructed by your physician. Please bring a list of your medications with dosages and list of allergies.
  • It is fine to eat before the test.

What do I expect during the Echocardiogram?
When you arrive, please check in at the receptionist desk. Our echo technologist will describe the procedure to you. You will be asked to change in to a cotton gown. You will not have to take your pants off. Three stickers will be placed on your chest to connect the ECG leads. This monitors your heart rhythm during the test. You will be asked to lay down on a special echo bed. This bed helps the technologist position you comfortably. The technologist will apply a cool gel on your chest and the transducer. The technologist will now move the transducer over your chest to obtain images of your heart.

Procedure time
The procedure takes approximately one hour of your time.

Procedure Risks
There are no known risks from ultrasound.

Test Results
The results of your test will be reviewed by the physician within 24 hours of the test. A final report will be given to your doctor, who will inform you of the findings.
